Valor K9 Training philosophy
Over the past twelve years handling and training Police Service Dogs I have seen, learned and applied numerous training styles, methods and philosophies. I have come to learn that there is no one RIGHT way to train a dog. Each individual dog, despite breed characteristics, is as different as you and I. Adhering to one training method or philosophy to achieve the desired results, limits trainers, usually resulting in inconsistent dogs.
I have learned through my training and experience that training is not breed specific, but rather temperament and drive specific.
“We are in luck if, in training a dog we can use his instincts as a basis for what we require. For the more instinctive an action is the more reliable it will be.” Col. Konrad Most
My training style and philosophy is to condition dogs, using their natural innate drives. Each dog’s drives and temperament vary, so must the training. I utilize a “middle of the road” training method, balanced between OPERANT motivational training and CLASSICAL compulsion (force) training. At first, motivational training is used to teach the dog (learning phase) what we want. A trained dog knows how to do what we want him to do, but he is not consistent, reliable in his response to stimulus. The dog has not learned he cannot get away with undesirable behavior. A trained dog operates in 50-90% reliability zone. Then compulsion training is introduced, using distractions and corrections, establishing a conditioned stimulus (CS) to a conditioned response (CR). A properly conditioned dog operates in a 90% + reliability zone.
Dog Training is TRAINING people and CONDITIONING their dogs behaviors.
Valor K9 will design a training regimen for you and your dog that will produce a consistent and reliable dog, long after the work with your personal K9 instructor is over.
